I'm finding the six icons for different views quite handy. But remembering which does what would be easier if they were in the more logical order of CTRL + 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Not 7, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9.

I just hammer on them until I get a view I like. Never managed to remember anything about them. well, except the perspective/orthagonal switch. Not 7, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9. If you're using the icons, why not just look at the icon itself? They are pretty easy to figure out. If you are using the keyboard, just remember, starting at CTRL+4, top, bottom, left, right, front, back. _______________________________________________ OpenSCAD mailing list To unsubscribe send an email to [hidden email] |

I guess it's just a matter of personal preference and habit. Rather than 'look for icon, move mouse, click it', I'd find it faster to just tap the keys. Easy enough if I memorise something like 'Top-Bottom, Left-Right, Front-Back', and they were activated by Ctrl plus '4-5, 6-7, 8-9'.

Suggestion: Have the keys so that they make sense on the numpad arrows.
That would mean, in order: 6, 8, 2, 4, 1, 9. Sent from the OpenSCAD mailing list archive at Nabble.com. _______________________________________________ OpenSCAD mailing list To unsubscribe send an email to [hidden email] |

But that’s not the order they’re in ;-)

Plans are afoot to allow setting keyboard shortcuts, but resources are limited.
I doubt there would be support for changes to the current, long-held, default definitions.

The change I suggested would not need any remapping. Simply moving that leftmost icon (Ctrl+4) to the correct position in the sequence: top, bottom, left, right, front, back. At present it’s the only exception.
I’ve remapped mine (with an external tool, Macro Express Pro), to use the Numpad keys. As I’m new to OpenSCAD I don’t yet have the habit and ‘muscle memory’ of long term users. For anyone who considers similar remapping, I was warned that Shift+Ctrl plus the Numpad keys are “reserved for Windows features”. (I already have Ctrl with the Numpad keys assigned to other tasks.) But so far I’ve seen no negative consequences. There are many images, in the wild, with
it as is, so there is no good reason to make all that history invalid. It is good to have new ideas from new
users, but...backward compatibility. > the correct position in the sequence: top,
bottom, left, right, front, back For your definition of 'correct'. The
current situation is approaching a decade old. From:

??? So: right, back, front, left, bottom, top? or is that something else? I think better, assuming a user has a numpad, would be either; 4, 6, 2, 8, 9, 3 giving: left, right, back, front, top, bottom Best of all,of course, would be the ability to map it to whatever works for you. I'd tackle it myself, but at my age, I really don't feel like learning yet another language. Starting with Top, I chose these, all accompanied by Ctrl+Shift with my left hand:
8 = Top, 2 = Bottom, 4 = Left, 6 = Right, 1 = Front, 9 = Back Sent from the OpenSCAD mailing list archive at Nabble.com. _______________________________________________ OpenSCAD mailing list To unsubscribe send an email to [hidden email] |
I gather it works well for you. The reason I suggested my way was that 9 and 3 are also (Pg)up and (Pg)down. That is, if I had a numpad. Basically, the arrows on the numpad would point in the direction the eye is looking from, the side of the object that the viewer would be. Yes, those last two, Front and Back, were the ones I hesitated over. Number ONE, up front? Two diagonal extremes, 1 and 9 retaining some symmetry? The label significances were tempting, but I’d already concluded that internal debate about the other four, which contradict the direction of the arrows!
Anyway, I’m half expecting that ‘reserved for Windows’ thing to bite me at some point soon. If so will have to either search for a fresh set of six ‘meaningful’ hotkeys or learn to love the existing OpenSCAD configuration.
