uhmm alternative download site needed

donbright
so slashdot is reporting code.google.com will no longer allow uploads after jan 2014.

lol guess i will be scrapping those auto-upload scripts i just spent three days writing... buddhist sand painting.

anyone have a good place to upload binaries in the future?

Marius I know sourceforge interface is not so great but... are you totallly against? they do have SSH uploads so its not rocket science to rewrite the upload script.

hm, another one bites the dust..

Perhaps we should just get a decent web hosting solution which includes file hosting (and preferrably ssh uploads).
The easy way out appears to be dreamhost, bluehost. Perhaps there is a hosting provider out there who supports Open Source hosting?

What do other (small) free software projects do?

..but yes, sourceforge as a download site should be a good enough fallback. I'm getting tired of chasing these providers down though :/

What about https://fedorahosted.org/ ? You don't have to be Fedora
specific project, to use that service.

They seem to have a write-only file service - it feels wrong somehow (https://fedorahosted.org/web/faq).
I'd also like to see download statistics.

So far, it looks like sourceforge or self-hosted.

Since you can download single files from a Github project what stops you simply adding the binaries to the project?

Re: uhmm alternative download site needed

You just don't do that.
You can still upload to GitHub download via API, but it is a matter of time until they stop it too.

That sounds like a hack - git repos will remember all history so such repos would forever grow, unless we have a script for periodically rewriting history.
..plus that download stats won't work.

 -Marius

PS. Related to this we soon need a cron-job-like facility on the web backend to keep the gallery updated, so a move might be inevitable.

what if we encode the binaries as a lossless audio file? then we can upload them to bandcamp.

So wait, what's openscad.org hosted on now? And what kind of hosting requirements do you have that it isn't meeting?

Right now we're hosting as follows:
o web pages: github pages.
o downloads: google code
o mailing list: rocklinux
o forum: Nabble

What's not working 100% atm is:
o Google code will shut down downloads. We need release packages for all platforms, as well as development snapshots as static downloads with some kind of statistics solution
o The gallery needs a cron job to update against thingiverse (and in the future other sources)
o github pages seems to have weird outages

I see. Yeah, you can make stuff happen but it's gonna be limited to basically what openscad.org has now.

Maybe a good idea would be to get a vps and host cron jobs, packages and static content and/or jekyll blog there. What kind of traffic are you dealing with? Would donated space on someone's existing vps cut the mustard?

There's no jekyll - it's all based on manually maintained json files so far.
Traffic is low - ~1K hits per day.

Donated space would make sense - the keyword is minimal effort maintenance - with the resources we have today, we'd rather spend it on writing code than maintaining servers ;)

A cheap web host appears to be ~$5/month, so it's not really about cost, more about making it happen and not spend too much time hand-crafting scripts to accommodate exotic hosting solutions..

Bitbucket has downloads for free accounts -- and git/mercurial hosting, obviously.

I couldn't find an easy way to push downloads to bitbucket. Does anyone have experience with that?

I don't think we have motivation to write yet another custom upload script, as who knows when bitbucket decides to kill the download function..
