[openscad] Measurement tools

Torsten Wagner
Hi,

recently, I started again using openscad after a longer brake.
From all possible features I missing a simple ruler or measurement tool at most.
Sometimes code can be nasty and difficult to proof. I wish I would have the chance to measure distances within the 3D geometry just to make myself more confident about my code.

I would love to this a very basic toll which gives

P1(x,y,z) absolute coordinates of the first point
P2(x,y,z) absolute coordinates of the second point
dP(x,y,z) delta values between both points

Is there any way or desire to add this?

Thanks

Torsten

There are multiple ways of achieving this or similar results:
o I think here are some measurement helpers floating around on the internet (grids, rods etc.)
o We could add a grid display, in addition to the axes (in conjunction with 2D projection it should give a good idea)
o Direct measurement would be interesting - I guess we'd need some kind of GUI to position and display the measurement

Note also that measurement in general would require a full evaluation, as the preview mode doesn't actually know about the actual dimensions. We could probably get around that by doing smart projection and intersection calculations.

As most other feature requests, it's mostly about finding developer time :/

Does it need to - if you attach a checkerboard texture to each surface
won't opengl do it for you at least in terms of being able to see the
size of your various edges, or is it too hard to line the texture and
polygons generated up ?

I was thinking about measuring e.g. cross-sections of objects, but projecting a grid onto objects, and allow the user to rotate or change grid resolution, I guess we could get decent visual approximations of dimensions.
