Where to get feedback on models?

Ben Sanders
Hello,

I'm in the process of trying to learn OpenSCAD, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a good forum or venue to get feedback on what I've done so far.  I'm getting results I like, but feel like I'm going about some things in an overly complicated way.

Thanks!
-Ben

Love the wrench. Posting on thingiverse.com is likely to get you some feedback.

I also noticed this on your blog

"I was having trouble getting the MCAD libraries that come packaged
with OpenSCAD to work on OSX. "

cd /Applications/OpenSCAD.app/Contents/Resources/libraries
../../MacOS/OpenSCAD  "

I was wondering which version of OpenSCAD are you using that has this problem?

I was a little hesitant posting more to Thingverse while I was learning.  But if they are open to it, might try that.  Thanks.

As to the MCAD problem, 2012.12 on OSX 10.7.4.  It is just in the Application folder like normal.

The #reprap IRC channel on Freenode is a great place to get feedback on OpenSCAD stuff, and help as well.

Hi Ben,

I'd like to exchange feedback on OpenSCAD objects, I'm also learning. I checked out your wrench, nice how you reuse the wrench_head_part.
The handle I would have done differently, I would rotate_extrude the biggest part.

I'm mostly interested in the parametric possibilities of OpenSCAD and the possibility to use it to design lasercuttable parts.
I have attached another design I want to put online in a few days.

I have been collecting some links here
and some tips to use OpenSCAD for lasercuttable objects

Best regards,
Peter Uithoven

Please post an example - such things should work, but it could happen that a development build is buggy from time to time.

Re: Where to get feedback on models?

Ok, trying again I can't get the same issue I did before.  Must have been doing something wrong.  I'll take that post down.

I still can't include multiple files using wildcards like I've seen referenced

use <MCAD/*.scad>;
hexagon(10);

gives me

WARNING: Can't open library file `/Applications/OpenSCAD.app/Contents/Resources/libraries/MCAD/*.scad'.

Is this supported?

This isn't supported. Do you know where you found that referenced?

It is referenced in the Readme on Github here: https://github.com/elmom/MCAD/blob/662f853f10dd5132949f0594768325299856c98e/README.markdown.  It took me a while to figure out that wildcards don't work and that you have to include each module separately.

Thanks for that - I knew I had seen it, but couldn't find it.

One question about posting to Thingverse - since I am modeling objects I didn't design, is that against their terms of service?

As long as the original object is not art and copyrighted, or patented otherwise, then you're fine.  Just provide attribution.

Only a lawyer could answer that in the US or EU. It's fiendishly
complicated because of all the bizarre regulations and exceptions piled
upon each other until nobody even the lawyers has a *clue* what will
happen in any given situation.

Generally the things to watch are

- trademarks (eg a model of the classic coke bottle might not go down
  well) or incorporating actual logos
- patents (although they may only apply if someone makes one)
- design rights (usually only applicable to commerical uses)
- copyright in some artistic cases (although a model of X and a copy of X
are different). In parts of the world there are deranged special rules
  about architecture

Irrespective of this there is a small risk you may get bogus take down
notices because corporations consider US law a convenience for bullying
little people.

Stuff like

http://www.wired.com/design/2012/05/3-d-printing-patent-law/

is becoming increasingly routine as the corporate bullies move in, just
as with non physical works.
