Skin Feature Request

Jeshua Lacock

Greetings,

I would love to see a skin feature - like extrude but with 2 profiles. One for top and one for the bottom.

I think this would be one of the most useful additional features that I can think of.

How difficult would this be to add?

Thanks,

If you make two very thin shapes by extruding the top and bottom profiles in place then I think taking the 3D hull will give you what you want as long as the shape is convex.

Hi Nop head,

Yes; I had considered that. But to make a smooth shape it could require hundreds or even thousands of profiles.

No just the top and the bottom.

Oh; I didn't realize there was a hull command. Nice!

Hi Guys,

what I'd like would be a command that would take a bitmap-file and make a square as big as the file with every pixel having a height that corresponds to its color.
Converting the color to a 3d-relief.
Is this possible in OpenSCAD?

Greetings,

TakeItAndRun

There is also the built-in surface() function that reads a data file
containing a grid of heights. This is not directly from a bitmap file,
but you can use something like netpbm tools to convert from your
format of choice into something very close (it looks like netpbm pgm
format is almost identical to that shown in the openscad user manual
example for surface()).

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/Other_Language_Features
http://netpbm.sourceforge.net/doc/pgm.html

Cheers,
Len.
