OpenSCAD-2013.06 Release Candidate

kintel
Administrator
Hi all,

Please consider the current master branch (commit 2db5b5f856d) a Release Candidate of OpenSCAD-2013.06.
Release notes are collected here: http://github.com/openscad/openscad/tree/master/RELEASE_NOTES

Please give it a spin. Mac and Windows snapshot binaries are online.
For Linux, we don't yet have static binaries, but local binaries are not that hard to build manually.

Cheers,

 -Marius

Re: OpenSCAD-2013.06 Release Candidate

Torsten Wagner
Hi Marius,

I gave it a spin for Arch-Linux which has a package for the git-version. Not sure I really hit the correct commit, however, compiling and installation went smooth without problem.
Opening some of the example files and play around with them did not create any problems.

Thus, I would assume it is pretty much ok.

Greetings

Torwag

Hi Miro

Does OpenCSG look normal when you open up the GUI on those examples?

Re: OpenSCAD-2013.06 Release Candidate

OK... I think it might be related to Gallium drivers, I will try to look into it..

For the non-OpenCSG errors.... do you have an ~/.ICEauthority file and can you temporarily erase it or move it?

Re: OpenSCAD-2013.06 Release Candidate

Hi Miro,

Is there any way you can set these environment variables for the test?

export GALLIUM_DRIVER=softpipe
export DRAW_USE_LLVM=no

I have them set on a Fedora 18 PPC build and get 100% OpenCSG test passing.

Ok, my Fedora 18 on PPC is using Mesa not Gallium. So I guess the problem is there.
I will try to figure something out but it will take a while. Thanks

Re: OpenSCAD-2013.06 Release Candidate

In reply to this post by Miro Hrončok
Miro,

I have just done a 'yum update' of Fedora 18 on an amd64 box, and now the only Failures are opencsg example 7 and example 8. (and the throwntogether test which is not a big deal)

The difference is that my VM machine is on

OpenGL Version: 2.1 Mesa 9.2.0 GL Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.3, 128 bits)

while your tests that you linked show this:

OpenGL Version: 2.1 Mesa 9.1 GL Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on softpipe

I would be very curious to know if you can run yum update and if your machine would then get newer drivers and have similar test results to my VM test machine on fedora 18?

Thanks again.

In reply to this post by kintel
Marius --- hmm.. maybe! But we don't have a way to flip the opencsg renderer for testing, do we?

I would also like to note that under gallium we arent seeing the example001 large image-size failure that we've seen on other platforms.

Re: OpenSCAD-2013.06 Release Candidate

SO i have been playing around with various VMs and it seems that software rendering on X has moved to Gallium as a driver on various linux distros- and it's broken.

I think the workaround here is to use --render for now to do CGAL renders, and in a year or two perhaps Gallium will be more mature.

The other workaround is to use hardware rendering instead of software rendering. This is done by just running openscad under X with a suitable hardware driver.

Should I add a 'known bugs' section to the Release Notes?

Please do.

The whole OpenGL situation on Linux is really confusing. I'd love to see some collection of knowledge on this topic, but it's probably a lot of work to assemble such a document..

We should start a FAQ as well - this being a prime target.

The RC works on a model that blew up previous versions. The CGAL compile
requires nigh onto 40 minutes and 100k elements, but it eventually
crosses the finish line and produces a good STL.

Thanks for all the great work...

It's usually pretty good and will handle a lot of stuff. If OpenSCAD is
hitting it then it would be worth filing bugs.

Also the CPU can matter a lot - there are different paths for
SSE2/SSE3/SSE4.1 and some of the older and the 32bit CPU paths are a bit
less tested.

That doesn't work for some ATI configurations at least when viewing via
F5. Unfortunately 3D on x86 has been problematic due to vendors being
utterly paranoid and unhelpful about documentation in the past (and in
some cases still) and also it being a low priority for vendors. The fact
the ATI breaks when its normally fairly good makes me suspect that
OpenSCAD generates some peculiar graphics requests (which shouldn't crash
either of course).

The state of 3D is changing rapidly with things like Steam, Android
based gaming, WebGL and so forth making it a priority.

As to how it all fits together

The kernel has a direct rendering manager for X and for other targets.
That handles command streams, multiplexing, some memory management,
graphics IOMMU etc and presents a device specific interface but with some
common commands too.

The DRI user library knows how to issue those commands, relocations and
other bits that go with them for the card. Again its drawing system
agnostic. It just draws stuff.

Mesa provides the GL on top of all this with the driver specific Mesa
driver generating command streams and using the DRI library to talk to
talk to the card via the kernel DRM.

There is also a memory manager (GEM) allowing things like direct memory
sharing between the card and user space apps.

Historically software rendering was done via Mesa with Mesa generating
X11 command streams for the resulting output. The new llvmpipe driver uses
llvm to write pipelines and can also make use of GEM and other features.
So its way way faster but probably has the odd bug left here and there.

If I remember rightly then

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTPIPE=y

will force the old software renderer to be used.

Yes!!! Awesome. Is this an open source model?
