The XYZ labels in the axis indicator (the red-green-blue dingus in the
lower-left corner with Show Axes active) became pale gray in a recent

Could those become black again, as they were in earlier versions?

I vaguely recall that "good contrast" requires a large difference along
at least two of the hue, saturation, and value axes.
Vassar College, who should have known better, used their gold-on-maroon
school colors on campus signage for many years, which made the text
completely illegible from normal distances: similar hue, same
saturation, similar value. They recently put up white-on-green signs and
all is well.
