Dune Wyrm 2 Volumes won't save

Qbert
I am working with this design:

in this version of OpenSCAD:

OpenSCAD version 2014.07.17

and I get a result that I cannot copy from the window, however it says simple:  yes and Volumes:  2.  I suspect it is the two volumes (the sand is hollow and the wyrm has a digestive system from mouth to tail (for blowing smoke if you know what i mean, its a pipe or something that can e used in a dune bong or something.  but not if i cannot generate an stl file!  the stl it generates after an error is zero bytes long.

Whats up with that?

Les

I believe Volumes 2 is the inside volume (i.e. the solid) and the outside volume, i.e 'air'. A cube() has Volumes 2, a hollow cube has 3 volumes.

So the hole thru the middle is part of the outside volume. That implies that the sand is not hollow.??

If part of it is from an import'ed STL, I'd look there first.

Unless it is open underneath or has a hole, like to let shapeways material out.

I checked both stl files with Atangeo Balancer, they are both watertight.  I made them both with OpenSCAD (the sand was made with Processing which output an openSCAD polyhedron, while the Wyrm was just made with OpenSCAD).  Trying again with modified model.

Re: Dune Wyrm 2 Volumes won't save

Peter Falke
Sometimes one gets overlapping vertices or facets.
Try shifting the wyrm in the z axis by 100, 1, 0.001,  -.00001.

Hope it helps,
TakeItAndRun

P.S.: If you want to share your code we can take a look at it.

In wyrm.scad is a small problem:
pow(i, -0.3) is undefined for i=0, thus the translation i s just ignored.

Your surface is the problem.

See this thrown together view
Thrown_Together.JPG

I can't point to the specific bit of your polyhedron.

This view, of the bottom, from Netfab may not be the problem, but such a black hole of converging triangles may not be the best layout.

Netfab2.JPG

BTW, nice scalely effect of the dragon.

Qbert
Bah, i give up on that Processing code I wrote to generate a height map readable by OpenSCAD.  I’ll figure out an OpenSCAD way to do it.

Re: Dune Wyrm 2 Volumes won't save

Oskar
If a top level union operation fails, there is a trick that works with most downstream software: Export the different pieces separately as STLs and then just concatenate the resulting files. If the STLs are generated by something other than OpenSCAD, make sure they are in ascii format.

Oskar, that is truly brilliant!  Tell you what, I’ll attempt to write a utility in processing that assembles an arbitrary number of stl files into one big stl file and displays the scene maybe even.  Thanks!

In the dev snapshots, surface() can read PNG files. Maybe that helps?
