Colors and texts in rendered diagram?

Al
I am a beginner at OpenSCAD, and I like it very much.  But I have two issues.
I have a nice 3D figure I've created, which includes different colors and
some text.  But when I render it, all the colors vanish as does the text.
How can I get the colors and text in the rendered result?

I'm using version 20171106 under ArchLinux.

For that matter, what is the best way of saving a diagram so that somebody
else can play around with it?  Somebody who doesn't necessarily have
OpenSCAD themselves?  I'd like to send my completed diagram to a colleague.

Thanks everybody,
Al

ATM colour is a preview only attribute, as there is little to no support for
colour properties in 3D rendered formats like STL. It is a work-in-progress
to support it in rendered format, but not anywhere close to reality.

Text is a 2D geometry, if you want to show it with a 3D object, you need to
linear_extrude()
<https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/Using_the_2D_Subsystem#Linear_Extrude>
it to some thickness (height=?) to make it a 3D object.

Once you do that, apart from colour, you can export it to a range of 3D
formats (no colour), which your colleague will need a 3D viewer, there are a
number. What Operating System do they have?

Alternatively you could  export in 2D
<https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/DXF_Extrusion>  , from
various angles.

Thanks very much - that all makes sense.  I can certainly extrude text to
make it 3D.

As to colors, that's a pity, but I now understand the limitations.  I am in
fact trying to make a sort of 3D model diagram which explains the
interrelationships between parts of a structure: there are too many to do it
easily in 2D, and I can get a nice effect in 3D.  But the result needs to be
portable.  The preview, with the colors, looks good, and it's that I'd want
to make available.  Maybe the best option would be to use OpenJSCAD?

Thanks again,
Al

Sorry, I'm not up on OpenJSCAD, it would depend on its 3D rendering engine,
again the file format re colour may be the problem. Others may comment.

You can also export as .PNG from preview as an image.
