An OpenSCAD conference / developer-meeting ?

Felipe Sanches
I've just had an idea. Why not organize an OpenSCAD developer meeting / libre-software parametric design conference ?!

I have been coding hundreds of lines of OpenSCAD scripting as my full-time job (designing a 3d printer at my company: Metamaquina.com.br). And there are lots of ideas of improvements (most of them related to easing 3d modeling of mechanical engineering parts) that I would like to add to OpenSCAD eighter by talking to the main developers (I think it mainly means Marius Kintel) or by writing patches myself. While online collaboration works fine, I think there's potential for boosting the development of new cool/useful sub-projects whenever hackers get together to brainstorm together. So, organizing a mini-conference seems to be a good idea.

Of course this idea is also an excuse for me to visit Metalab, the awesome hackerspace in Vienna, Austria :-D  I've been there a couple times in the past few years and that was the place where I heard Marius Kintel himself suggesting that I should learn a powerful 3D scripting language called OpenSCAD...

Anyway... This is just an idea. I'm not really sure when I would be able to travel again (lot's of work at Metamáquina and not much money available for travelling at the moment), but I thought I should definitely share the idea in this list in the hope that other people like it. I could host the conference in São Paulo, Brazil, where I live. But I think Europe would be better given the open hardware movement is stronger there and there's probably a larger openscad user-base in countries such as Germany. Metalab sounds like a good venue for such meeting and I would be totally OK if the meeting/conference happens without my presence :-)

Marius, would Metalab be OK to host it? Let's consider organizing something like these for next year or so?

happy hacking,
Felipe Sanches

I like the idea! Question is if OpenSCAD is big enough, or if we should try to blend it into e.g. http://libregraphicsmeeting.org

In terms of OpenSCAD, I'd love to explore ways of opening up development as we're still dangerously low on development resources, and something like a conference/meeting might spawn some interest.

In terms of location I'm open - Metalab is a perfect place for a small event. In reality we might need to optimize for travel cost for the actual attendees. I've also thought about organizing meetups at the bigger conferences, but the OpenSCAD community spans too many disciplines to find suitable ones.

Anyway, let's keep playing with the thought!

Yes, I've been to LGM and it's definitelly my source of inspiration :-)

Another way of achieving that would be to foster something like the python's PEPs: http://www.python.org/dev/peps/

OK. So I'l start by asking wheter there's anybody here planning to attend FISL, the International Free Software Forum at Porto Alegre, Brazil, next July 3rd to July 6th
http://softwarelivre.org/fisl14/o-evento/fisl?lang=en

If there's anybody there interested, even if it's a single person, I'd love to have a small meeting to talk about OpenSCAD.
The most interesting thing this year is that the conference for the first time has a dedicated track for talks related to OpenHardware!

I suggest you all try doing the same for all other free software conferences you plan to attend.

cheers,
Felipe Sanches
