3D model of assembled Mendel???

Dan Zuras 3D

        Folks,

Can anyone tell me where I can download a 3D model
        of an assembled Mendel?

I know such models must exist because I've seen
pictures from them posted on various Reprap web
        pages.

And, as I am about to assemble my own first Mendel,
I would like something I can roll around on the
screen & look at from any angle.  Just to come to
a better understanding of what I have to do.

        Thanks,

                                Dan

There's a VRML file of an early version here:
http://reprap.org/wiki/MendelUnderDevelopment

If this works for you, I could try to hunt down a recent version.

I only need something to roll around on the screen so I
can look at it from all sides.  And old version should
        do well.

I found the website.  I downloaded the zip file.  I
unzip'ed it into the wedge.wrl file.  But alas, I don't
know how to look at it.

I am new to this 3-D game & don't know all the ropes
yet.  But I am running on a brand new Ubuntu 10.04 if
        that helps at all.

Can you tell me how to look at this file in that context?

        Thanks,

                                Dan

You need a VRML viewer or a tool which imports VRML.
Personally, I use a Mac-only software which I built myself on top of the Coin3D library (coin3d.org). It's a bit of a drag to get started there though.
Alternatively, tools like MeshLab can import VRML.
Also look at the official list of VRML viewers:

whitedune can import .wrl files.  So install it

  sudo apt-get install whitedune

and run it, and import wedge.wrl.  Then... play with it.  For all the
docs on whitedune, install whitedune-docs and then read them (look under
/usr/share/doc/whitedune-docs/docs/ ).

There used to be a free wrl viewer called FreeWRL, but it's not in
Lucid, I'm not sure if it ever was officially packaged for Ubuntu.

I looked where you suggest.  Found a couple of things
that don't seem to work.  Even found something called
octave which, while it doesn't help my current problem
DOES sound interesting to this retired mathematician.

Then I found whitedune.  It solved the problem & I can
now look at that model from all sides.  The mouse is
awfully sensitive but I'll get used to that.

        Thank you for your help.
